When our members see a need, they act. SFS youth and adults organize and participate in a variety of Tikkun Olam and Tzedakah projects that benefit the congregation and people in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, and beyond. Whether you participate once a year, once a month, or once a week, you can find – or create – a project to heal our world.

Feeding Mount Vernon

We are dedicated to alleviating hunger in our home, Mount Vernon. For over two decades, we have had a multi-generational effort to support Community Service Associates, a Mount Vernon food pantry. We cook and deliver Thanksgiving dinner, including the Religious School students who bake pies. During the remainder of the year, we prepare a meal monthly. During the Passover season, we raise funds, so that we can present a check to Feeding Westchester for nutritious and wholesome food for our Mount Vernon neighbors in need.
Blood Drive

In conjunction with the New York Blood Center, Sinai Free Synagogue has hosted an annual Super Bowl Sunday Blood Drive for more than ten years. There is a constant need for blood to help cancer patients, accident victims, and others. Potential donors do not need to be members of the synagogue, and blood donations are welcome at the New York Blood Center’s Elmsford facility throughout the year.

B’nei Mitzvah Projects Give Back

The small community with a big heart plays a huge part when it comes to B’nei Mitzvah projects. We encourage each student in conjunction with their family to participate in a mitzvah project of their choosing before or after their celebration. These projects signify a commitment to taking the Jewish value of tzedakah and social action seriously and to carrying forward this commitment into action. Through the years, our students have chosen various ways to give back to the community and beyond. Whether it is raising money to buy eye glasses for children in Africa, building houses for Habitat for Humanity or donating coats or socks for the needy, students reach out to our congregation for their support. Together they help the Bar or Bat Mitzvah reach and exceed their goals by rolling up their sleeves, and supporting the projects financially.
Resettling Refugees
