The SinaiFree Film Society will discuss the documentary “Famous Nathan.”
Let’s continue to celebrate summer as we discuss “Famous Nathan.” Lloyd Handwerker directed this film about his grandfather, Nathan Handwerker, who founded Nathan’s Famous, the iconic New York institution, in Coney Island in 1916. The film interweaves archival footage, family photos, home movies and audio from Nathan in his only interview ever. Add to that revealing and at times hilarious conversations with the store’s dedicated band of workers, not at all shy at offering opinions, memories and the occasional tall tale – and you have the ingredients for a delicious “Kosher style” snack.
And be sure to read this article, which provides additional, fascinating history on Handwerker and Coney Island.
The film is available for free on Kanopy and PLEX; for free, with ads, on Peacock, the Roku Channel, tubi and Pluto TV; and for $2.99 on Amazon, YouTube, Google Play, Vudu and Microsoft. There are two DVDs in the Westchester Library System, and two DVDs in the New York Public Library.
